Explore Quitinday Green Hills Formation
Jessica Imperial

Aside from the famous Mayon Volcano, Albay is becoming known now for having its own version of the popular Chocolate Hills in Bohol—the Quitinday Green Hills located in Camalig, Albay.

The hills, which occupy an area that stretches from the third to the second district of the province, are not symmetrical and conical as compared to those in Bohol but its appearance are similar and its limestone composition are probably the same. Due to its jaw-dropping appeal, the hills are now becoming a favourite weekend destination and are recently explored by an increasing number of tourists.

The province is abundant in wonderful geological features, such as the perfect-cone Mt. Mayon, the uniquely shaped Kapuntukan Hill, and the popularized Lignon Hill, which have been attracting visitors for years now.

Quitinday Hills are thought to be a hidden geological treasure of the Albay since many locals do not know about it although those who travel to Legazpi City via plane are being welcomed by the hills’ amazing aerial view when their plane approaches the city’s domestic airport. If Chocolate Hills are named as such because of their chocolate look, the Quitinday Hills are being proposed to be called “pili nut hills” because of their pointed hilltops and the richness of pili nuts in the locality.

The beautiful rolling hill formation is just an hour away from Legazpi and can be reached by treading roads and highways in Camalig. The travel will also give visitors the chance to witness the pastoral environment of the municipality where locals seem to be residing graciously and a centennial bridge built in 1915 that remains passable. The few more minutes uphill climb from the trek’s base to the hill reserve is a little bit challenging but truly enjoying and invigorating. Being in the hills gives a magical experience of being in the mid of the formation and the lush greenery.
